Hayato sits in a corner of 7th Street, a fifteen-minute walk from the Japanese American National Museum. It currently holds two Michelin stars and was ranked number one in the 2024 L.A. Times list of best restaurants.

Many of its downtown neighbors mistake loud interiors for a sense of occasion, but Hayato does the opposite. By focusing on traditional Japanese cuisine, the room stays quiet and purposefully sparse, allowing the meal to command the focus. While the rest of the city chases trends or shifting aesthetics, this space succeeds because it ignores the surrounding noise entirely. It is dressier than the casual stalls found at Grand Central Market nearby, but the restraint is what makes it feel distinct.
